SAAC Minutes – December 12, 2004

  • Dr. John Saddlemire, Vice President for Student Affairs, came and talked to us about a few things dealing with different services that available to the students. Counseling services is one of just many. Each counselor has an area of expertise. Also over 50% of students that use this service are referred by other students. He also touched on the housing lottery. They are making plans to make housing work out a little better. Lottery numbers are already out, and this is to make students aware of their situation now in case a lottery has to be used. There is also a cap of 8 semesters, which will allow housing to open up. They are also in the works to penalize those using on-campus housing as a fallback until they find off-campus housing. The Student Union second half is falling behind schedule. They are expecting that to open up more towards the beginning of 2006. Chuck and Augies (the restaurant), is expected to open up when we get back from winter break. Spring Weekend was also brought up. He wants student-athletes to be careful where they go and to stay out of trouble. X lot is becoming a concern because it’s being used for gang initiations, younger kids are showing up and causing trouble, and those coming from off-campus are also causing trouble. *The biggest thing was to keep checking your Husky Mail accounts for information from the school. Also the UConn Student homepage has a lot of information.*
  • Community Service Recap

Cornerstone Christmas Party was a huge success. 15 athletes showed up and everyone had a great time.

The toy drive was also a huge success. We had 3 truckloads of toys for the Cornerstone Center, and 1 car load for the Village in Hartford.

We raised about $300 for the Tri-Town Shelter.

The Fox Middle School Presentation also went well. It was an assembly of kids for being Honor Roll. They had a question and answer period with the athletes and they had a lot of fun.

·        Dr. Bruening talked about Husky Sport Activities. They have gone well this semester but she would like more participation. She let us know that student-athletes have participated in 7 events, with 33 athletes, and 270 kids were reached. Not enough men and minorities were involved in the community services and in SAAC, we would like to increase that.

·        Husky Midnight Marathon will be coming up once everyone gets back from Winter Break. The dates are Feb. 11th – 12th. We would like to have teams sign up to participate in the autograph signing sessions. Also if your team is willing to team up with another team to sponsor a child please let Ashleigh Campen know. This is a great chance to make a difference in the lives of those children that are battling illnesses or are terminally ill.

·        The NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Conference is coming up. Student-athletes that are in their junior year or below are able to get involved. Bobby Folan from swimming represented us last year – if you have any questions on the event. The deadline for the applications is Jan. 10th.

·        Big East SAAC Updates will be posted on the Website for everyone to review.

·        SAAC needs to revise their Bylaws. If anyone is interested in helping please let Joel know.

·        Good Luck to those teams competing over winter break, and to everyone else have a great break and good luck with your training!
