Are you a leader? Many athletes are asked this
question without knowing what the word “Leadership” really means. The
leader is not always the best or the loudest player on your team. A
great leader is someone who possesses many of the following
characteristics:
Ten
Commandments of Leadership
- Thou shalt
listen.

People will not listen unless they know you are willing to
listen

Never learned anything with my mouth open

Empower the people around- create ownership
- Thou shalt
be a good friend.

Good relationships take hard work

Be true to your word, people want a leader whom they can
believe.

Caring. Don’t care how much you know until they know how much
you care.

Give respect and you will receive respect.

continue to learn.

Learn as though you will live forever, live as though you will
die tomorrow.

Maintain a beginner’s mind
- Thou shalt
provide vision.

Good leaders have a vision and have the ability to convey that
vision.

Raise standards
- Thou shalt
serve others.

Look to serve, not be served

Leader is responsible for setting a positive example.
- Thou shalt
have charisma.

People want to be around good leaders because they like what
they do. They display charisma.

Good leaders have passion, can’t fake passion.

Want enthusiasm…got to give enthusiasm.

demonstrate patience and persistence.

Build the mountain
- Thou shalt
give positive feedback.

Compliment every chance you get

Shoot straight with honest evaluation

Best self
- Thou shalt
demonstrate flexibility.

Have plan, but don’t be a slave to your plan

Cannot treat everyone the same, but you can treat everyone
fairly.

enjoy the journey.

You may only get one chance.

Keep an even keel mentality.

Embrace adversity.
