Distance Coach Kim McGreevy

Five-time All-American
2000 Olympic Trials

Kim McGreevy is in her fourth year as the Assistant Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country Coach. Responsible for cross country and the middle distance/distance events on the track, McGreevy looks to build a distance corps that is competitive in the BIG EAST, to contribute to the program’s dominance in the conference. During her first three seasons as a Husky, McGreevy has developed the talent within the program while recruiting outstanding freshman classes.

Last season, McGreevy coached her first All American and BIG EAST Champion, Jillian Sullivan. The senior captain earned All BIG EAST, All Region and ALL America honors during her final cross country season while on her way to the BIG EAST steeplechase crown in the spring. Sullivan, who was a walk-on as a freshman, developed into one of the greatest athletes in the history of the program and was the team's first ever Cross Country All American.

During each cross country season, the team captain has finished in the Top 10 at the New England Championships (Kristen Meyer, 5th in 2004; Niamh Cunningham, 10th in 2005). On 13 occasions, McGreevy’s athletes have received All-New England honors, including one New England Champion (Jillian Sullivan; Steeplechase, 2006) and three runners-up (Niamh Cunningham; 10,000 in 2006 and 4x800m relay in 2006 and Sullivan cross country 2006). At the BIG EAST Championships, Sullivan’s All-BIG EAST performances in the steeplechase (1st place, 2007; 3rd, 2006) are the most notable of the 10 scoring performances. McGreevy’s athletes have  excelled in the steeplechase, qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships in the distance hurdling event.  Last spring, Sullivan also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the steeplechase, becoming the first distance athlete to do so on the track in over 10 years.

Before coming to UConn, McGreevy spent nine years at Penn State, where she was both a student-athlete and a coach. While coaching at Penn State, McGreevy worked within the staff that rebuilt the program into a Big Ten Conference powerhouse. In addition, she earned her master’s degree and ran as professional athlete during her tenure on staff. As a post-collegiate athlete, McGreevy was sponsored by the New York Athletic Club. Most notably, she competed in the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 1500 and represented the United States at the 2001 Ekiden Relay in Chiba, Japan. In cross country, she earned eleventh place at the 2001 World 8k Trials. On the track, McGreevy finished 10th in the 1500 at the 2001 USATF Outdoor Championship and was 12th in the same event in 2002. Her personal records stand at 4:17.10 for the 1500 and 15:55.24 for the 5000.

McGreevy was a standout performer in her collegiate career at Penn State, highlighted by being named Penn State Female Athlete of the Year in 1997. After winning the Big Ten Cross Country Championship in 1996, she was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Year in that sport. She earned All-America honors five times, including: the 3000 (indoor - 1995, while at the U.S. Naval Academy), cross country (1996), the distance medley relay (indoor - 1996), the mile (indoor - 1997), and the 1500 (outdoor – 1997). Succeeding also in the classroom, McGreevy was an Academic All-America selection. In the fall of 2005, McGreevy was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Northeast Chapter, an honor bestowed on great athletes in state history.

After attending the U.S. Naval Academy from 1993-1995, McGreevy earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting/minor in Kinesiology (1998) and a Master of Education in Program in Student Affairs (2003), both from Penn State. Originally from Clarks Summit, Pa., she now resides in Manchester, Conn.
