BIG EAST ANNOUNCES 2001-2002 MEN’S
BASKETBALL CONFERENCE OPPONENTS
UConn crossover to games include matchup with Georgetown
June 25, 2001
STORRS, CONNECTICUT-- The University of Connecticut Men’s Basketball
team will play a challenging league regular season schedule in 2001-2002
featuring 16 games, including four crossover games which were announced Monday.
For the second consecutive season, the BIG EAST Conference will see men’s
basketball regular season play in the league split into two seven-team
divisions, the East and the West. Each team will play 16 games, 12 against each
division member (home and away) and four games against teams from the other
division. Each school in the league will not play three BIG EAST teams during
the regular season.
UConn, a member of the East Division, will play home-and-away contests
against Boston College, Miami, Providence, St. John’s, Villanova and Virginia
Tech. The Huskies four crossover games against West Division schools include
home contests vs. Seton Hall and West Virginia and road matchups at Georgetown
and Rutgers. UConn will not play Notre Dame, Pittsburgh or Syracuse during
regular season play in 2001-2001. The Huskies and Orangemen are not scheduled to
meet for the first time since the 1976-77 season, a stretch of 24 straight
seasons in which the teams have played (1977-78 through 2000-2001).
The entire 2001-2002 UConn men’s basketball schedule, including dates and
site locations for all BIG EAST games, is expected to be announced in late
August.
