On January 18 of this year our university lost a young man to a shooting in his hometown. He was rebuilding his life after spending 3 years in prison, he had been an all conference running back last fall and I had the privilege of sharing a seat with him on road trips, he was only 23. When I heard about the death of Jasper Howard I was saddened even though I am not a fan. May God bless UCONN

Lois (Bloomfield, CT): King Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes that ‘To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:’ At this moment in time, the purpose for Jasper’s premature death eludes us; but the purpose of Jasper’s life does not – he showed us the truth of Romans 5:3-5 “…suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts.” I pray that the Almighty’s love and comfort will sustain the Howard family, Coach Edsall, the football team, and all who grieve the passing of this promising young man, and I pray for a renewed hope in Jasper’s baby.

A Mom in NJ: As I sit here watching the funeral I am in joy to see the outpouring of love for this young man. You touched alot of people-may you rest in peace. Gods blessings on your family, friends & the UCONN FB team.

Dorian, Orlando: Being a African-American male who attended a predominantly white institution for undergrad, I have seen numerous fights break out at these greek/student union on campus parties. I know that it is all usually over some foolishness and most of the time could have been avoided. I do not know the story behind what happened at the party that night, but to see Jasper lost his life this way is beyond sad. My friends and I have been in that situation numerous times and luckily no one on either side ever decided to make a fatal attempt on someone's life. I will continue to pray for your loss and your family.

Tom Glenwood IA: My heart and prayers go out to the UCONN family and the Jasper family. I cried watching that game Saturday morning. God bless u all.

Sue, Tolland, CT: I'm so sorry for the precious loss of Jasper. There is no measurement of sympathy or tears that can make it better for you although I send you both. Only time can heal. May you carry his memory with such pride and love for who he was and the potential for what he would have become. Know that he is never really gone. He is with you all. I feel such disgust to know that someone can have so little respect for love and human life. May those who did this morbid act take responsibility. God will be the judge. My sincere blessing go out to his family and to all of those lives that he touched.

Debbie (Tolland, Ct.): All of UConn and the state of Ct. grieve for your loss. He was a part of us and always will be. I have done alot of crying the last week, thinking about what's happened here on our campus. I hope it never happens again.
