Now in her 12th season, assistant coach Ellen Mahoney has brought an outstanding veteran scholastic and extensive coaching background to the Husky program since her appointment in the fall of 1996.

In 2001, she was inducted into the Norwich Free Academy’s Inaugural Sports Hall of Fame as well as being a member of the 2001 Speedline NFCA Northeast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.

Prior to Connecticut, Mahoney led the Ledyard (Conn.) High School softball program to seven state championship titles. Mahoney registered an impressive record of 355-84, for an 80.9 winning percentage at Ledyard.

Before she left for the collegiate ranks, her high school team became a four-time defending State Champion, having earned the Class LL state titles in 1995 and 1996 and the Class L Championships in 1993 and 1994. During the 1990s, she compiled an impressive 165-10 overall record.

In June of 1996, Mahoney was one of eight finalists for the 1996 National High School Coaches Association National Softball Coach of the Year award, after earning district honors as the Coach of the Year. A Connecticut Softball Hall of Fame inductee, she was also voted the Amateur Baseball Woman of the Year in 1992 by the U.S. Baseball Federation and received Connecticut Special Congressional Recognition three times for her excellence in coaching (1993, 1994 and 1995).

During her 20-year softball tenure at Ledyard, Mahoney led the Colonels to the Connecticut state tournament 19 times, while they advanced to the state championship game on 10 occasions. During her last eight seasons (1989-96), her team advanced to the state finals every year and captured six state championships. Her teams won a share of 10 consecutive Eastern Connecticut Conference Championships (1987-96). Ledyard compiled a 105-game regular season win streak over six seasons.

She also served as head tennis coach for 13 years at Ledyard, as her teams registered a 178-36 overall record en route to eight league championships and one fall state championship.

A native of Norwich, Conn., Mahoney is a 1972 graduate of Connecticut where she was a three-sport student-athlete in volleyball, basketball and softball.
