Megan Cersosimo
Head Coach
Second Season
UConn '01
Megan Cersosimo, a 2001 UConn graduate, took over her alma
mater’s program prior to the 2007 season with the primary goal of
bringing it into the BIG EAST Conference spotlight, and ultimately
the national stage. With the second-most wins in school history and
the program’s first BIG EAST Player of the Year, many would say that
she is well on her way to accomplishing that.
“Megan has done an outstanding job in her first year as head coach
of the Huskies,” said Senior Women’s Administrator Pat Babcock. “She
has a great knowledge of the University, history with the program
and passion for the game. That is clear every time that she takes to
the field with her team.”
In her first season as head coach, the Huskies went 10-6 with their
first conference win since 2005. Five of the six losses came at the
hands of ranked opponents and three of them were by two or fewer
goals.
In addition to the team’s successes, Cersosimo’s players earned
unprecedented levels of recognition in 2007. Shannon Burke was named
a Second Team Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA)
All-American, as well as the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year,
becoming UConn’s first major award winner in lacrosse. She also
earned her third First Team All-BIG EAST nod, while Kristin Link
joined her on the second team.
Cersosimo served as the interim head coach for four months before
receiving the permanent post in November 2006. She served as an
assistant coach at UConn for the five seasons prior under Bonnie
Rosen, who coached the Huskies for nine years since the program’s
inception. While serving as an assistant at UConn, she helped coach
all aspects of the game with a focus on the defensive efforts.
It should come as no surprise that UConn’s rise into a regional and
conference contender began with Cersosimo’s entrance into the
coaching ranks. In these six years, 10 UConn players have earned
All-BIG EAST recognition and three (Burke, Pam Lowie and Tracy
Mullaney) went a step further, becoming the program’s only IWLCA
All-Americans.
A four-year letterwinner for the Huskies, Cersosimo was part of
UConn’s first recruiting class. She was named to the 2002 North
Regional All-American Second Team and to the 2001 First Division of
New England All-Star Team. On a higher level, she was selected to
represent New England in the US Lacrosse National Tournament.
A captain both her junior and senior years, she finished her
lacrosse career as UConn’s all-time leader in games started (58),
ground balls (174) and draw controls (70). Campbell also added 64
goals and 10 assists for 74 points. Her senior and junior years,
Cersosimo was involved in UConn’s Student Athletic Advisory Council
(SAAC), and was the council’s secretary in her senior year. Also in
her senior year, Cersosimo was named an UConn Club Outstanding
Senior Athlete.
Originally from Malvern, Penn., Cersosimo was a four-year
letterwinner in both soccer and lacrosse at Great Valley High
School. She was an All-PAC 10 honoree in lacrosse and was part of
the soccer state championship team and lacrosse state finalist team
her senior year.
Cersosimo graduated from UConn in 2001 with a degree in
communications. She is married to UConn assistant football coach
Matt Cersosimo and the couple had their first child, Brady, in
August 2007.
