1990

Despite suffering more losses and conceding more goals than any other UConn women's soccer team, the "Hollywood Huskies" recorded some of the most memorable victories in the program's history. The first of such drama occurred when North Carolina brought Kristine Lilly, Mia Hamm and a remarkable 103 game, five-year winning streak to Storrs. News of UConn's 3-2 overtime victory shocked the soccer community nationwide.

After narrowly qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, UConn began their improbable run to the final four with a 2-1 victory over in-state rival Hartford. In the quarterfinal, the team traveled to Virginia to face the heavily favored Cavaliers. When Virginia earned a corner kick in the final seconds, the UConn defense made a goal-line clear and save as time expired to preserve the 1-0 victory.  The drama

continued in the semi-final when the Huskies faced Brandi Chastain and undefeated Santa Clara. Down 0-1 with seconds remaining, Britton Arico's 25 yard shot, albeit miss-hit, squirted through the goalkeeper's hands and into the goal with only 5 seconds remaining on the clock. After a scoreless overtime, UConn won the match in sudden death penalty kicks. The magic ended in the Championship game as North Carolina avenged their earlier loss.  Although the 1990 team holds two of the program's unflattering records - most losses and most goals against - the "Hollywood Huskies" defeated every team who had been ranked #1 during the season (UNC, UVA, Santa Clara), captured the #1 ranking in the Northeast, advanced to the final four and played in the championship game.
