PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior sprinter Kevin Smith has been awarded the 2012-13 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarship as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Each institutional winner receives $2,000 toward graduate studies. The Harwinton, Conn. native, who is pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy, opened up his senior campaign with a first place finish in the 55m dash at the UConn Winter Invite and finished sixth in the 60m dash at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge.
“Kevin Smith epitomizes the descriptive title of student-athlete. He has persevered in both areas to be where he is today, working on his Doctorate and poised for a great BIG EAST Indoor Championship,” stated head coach Greg Roy. “He has been an integral part of our program for four years, and I look forward to seeing succeed in the near term this weekend and as he completes the Doctoral program in Physical Therapy.”
