In honor of National Student Athlete Day the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes is pleased to recognize Kelsey Maving of the women’s volleyball team for her distinguished career both in the classroom and on the court. Kelsey, a senior from Tonawanda, New York is set to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and a minor in molecular and cell biology.
Kelsey has consistently earned a high GPA throughout her career, balancing a difficult course load while being a top performer on the volleyball court. In 2011 Kelsey was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team and also honored as the UConn volleyball Defensive Player of the Year. She has been a model of consistency, playing in all 106 sets through 29 matches in 2011. Her teammates describe her as ‘a rock on the court’ and ‘the steadying presence when things get crazy’.
The 2012 season was even more rewarding for Kelsey as her teammates voted her MVP for her performance during her senior campaign. She will also leave UConn with her name in the record books as her 1,881 digs are the 2nd most in UConn Volleyball history. However, her greater impact may be the impression she made on her freshmen teammates who will remember Kelsey’s calm leadership on the court and her commitment to her academic pursuits.
After graduation in May Kelsey plans to continue her education and work towards her goal of becoming a physician’s assistant.
