PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The UConn baseball team took a rubber match from Siena by a score of 14-1 Monday afternoon at Tradition Field #5. The Huskies scored a season-high in runs behind 15 hits and got five-RBI performances from both Joe DeRoche-Duffin and Vinny Siena.
DeRoche-Duffin (Santa Ana, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with two runs in addition to his five batted in, and Vinny Siena (Woodbridge, Conn.) went 2-for-6 with a run and a pair of triples with his five RBIs. Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.) drove in three runs and had a pair of hits, while Bryan Daniello (Norwalk, Conn.) and Aaron Hill (Groton, Conn.) each went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
On the mound, Jordan Tabakman took the ball and tossed six innings, rebounding from a run in the first to allow one earned run on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Taylor Ahearn started for Siena and lasted three innings, surrendering nine hits and nine earned runs on three walks and two strikeouts.
The Saints jumped on the board in the top of the first for the third straight day, when they took a 1-0 lead with a Justin Esquerra RBI single. UConn answered with seven runs in the bottom of the second, with two-run singles from DeRoche-Duffin and Sundberg before Vinny Siena cracked a two-run triple to make it 7-1 Connecticut.
UConn tacked on three more runs in bottom of the third, again using RBI hits from DeRoche-Duffin and Sundberg before an RBI groundout from Siena. DeRoche-Duffin drove in two more in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double, putting UConn up 12-1.
After Tabakman closed the book on his outing with a 1-2-3 top of the sixth inning, Vinny Siena cracked his second two-run triple of the afternoon in the bottom of the frame to put two more on the board for the Huskies.
UConn got an inning each from Max Slade (Cheshire, Conn.), Devin Over (Windsor, Conn.) and Nico Darras (Laguna Beach, Calif.) out of the bullpen over the final three frames, with each tossing scoreless innings to close out the contest.
The Huskies return to action next weekend with a trip to Kennesaw, Ga. to take on the nationally ranked Owls of Kennesaw State. Game one on Friday, Feb. 27 is set for 4 p.m.
