Final Stats

HAMMOND, La. - It was quite a day for the No. 25 UConn baseball team with the Huskies sweeping a doubleheader against Southeastern Louisiana to claim a quality road series win. The Huskies mounted a ninth inning comeback to win game one, 7-6, and followed it up by holding on to a 6-4 win in the series finale.

Game One

Isaac Feldstein delivered a go-ahead two-run homer to deep center to lift the Huskies to a 7-6 lead with one out in the ninth inning. It was the third home run of the year for the UConn outfielder and came after Zac Susi was able to reach on a double.

Susi got the Huskies going early in the ballgame with an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the second. The Huskies scored five runs on seven hits in the opening three innings to take a 5-2 advantage. The Lions continued to claw back into the ballgame, scoring a run in each of their five at bats to begin the ballgame.

With the game tied 5-5 in the seventh, the Lions took their first lead of the day on an RBI single from Preston Faulkner.

The Huskies bullpen was solid with Jeff Kersten, CJ Dandeneau and P.J. Poulin throwing a combined five innings and allowing just one run. Dandeneau earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings without allowing a hit. Poulin picked up his first save of the season with a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Game Two

The Huskies carried momentum from game one into the series finale by storming ahead in the second inning. After the Lions gifted the Huskies a pair of baserunners, on a dropped pop up and a ball lost in the lights, Chris Winkel crushed a three-run dinger over the right field fence.

Up 3-2 in the fifth, UConn centerfielder Troy Stefanski drilled a solo homer over the right field fence. The second on the year for the North Stonington, Conn. native. Susi contributed his fourth RBI in the doubleheader later in the inning to make it 5-2 Huskies.

Chase Gardner got the start for UConn and earned his first win in a Husky uniform with a career-high five innings and five strikeouts.

The Lions would not go quietly and eventually pulled to within one in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Conor Moriarty made a diving stop on the third base line and fired a strike to first to end the threat and preserve a 5-4 lead.

Poulin came on in the eighth and recorded a six-out save with only one batter reaching via an error.

Anthony Prato provided Poulin with a little breathing room with an RBI triple in the ninth inning to make it 6-4 UConn.

The Huskies move to 4-2 on the season with the doubleheader sweep and are back in action next weekend at the Univeristy of North Florida beginning Friday, March 2 at 6 p.m.

Troy Stefanski is off to a fast start in his senior year with a pair of multi-hit games. Stefanski has four multi-hit games already this year after having a total of five a season ago.

The Huskies have hit eight home runs in six games this season. Last season, UConn did not record their eighth home run until April 5 vs. Hartford.

The Huskies ninth inning come-from-behind win was the first of the season for UConn. Last year the Huskies recorded two wins when they trailed heading into their final at-bat (March 17 at BYU & May 16 vs. URI)

UConn has swept three-straight doubleheaders dating back through last season (UMass Lowell & USF in 2017).
