JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - The No. 24 UConn baseball team secured a 5-4 win against UNF in the series opener at Harmon Stadium on Friday night. Tim Cate earned his first win of the season behind a season-high 7 innings and 10 strikeouts.
The Huskies took advantage in the second inning after grabbing a leadoff walk and error by the UNF shortstop. Chris Winkel and Troy Stefanski recorded back-to-back RBI singles to push the Huskies ahead, 2-0. John Toppa quickly followed with a two-run single past a drawn in infield.
Cate took advantage of the 4-0 lead, filling up the strike zone with his fastball and breaking ball command. The left-hander faced the minimum in five of his seven frames and left the ballgame with a 5-2 lead.
P.J. Poulin recorded his third save, in as many games, with a four-out save on Friday night. The left-hander stranded the tying run in scoring position in the ninth to preserve the victory. Poulin has tossed seven scoreless frames to open the 2018 season.

Anthony Prato recorded a multi-hit performance and tied his career-high with three stolen bases in the game. Winkel also chipped in a pair of hits and a stolen base.
The Huskies stole a season-high five bases on Friday night with Anthony Prato swiping three of them.
Tim Cate won his 10th career game in a UConn uniform and moved into a tie with Wills Montgomerie and Tim Norton for fourth on the all-time strikeouts list with 226. Cate passed Anthony Marzi (217) and Carson Cross (222).
The Huskies tied a season-high with four runs scored in the second inning.
The Huskies moved to 5-2 on the season with the win, the best start in the first seven games of the season since starting 5-2 in 2010.
Cate recorded his ninth career double-digit strikeout effort.
