DeLand, Fla. – Despite a solid day from the UConn bullpen the Huskies dropped the opening game of the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational, 4-3 against Western Michigan on Friday at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
UConn (4-4) jumped out to an early 1-0 in the first behind a leadoff triple from Aaron Hill (Groton, Conn.). Anthony Prato quickly moved the Huskies ahead with an RBI groundout to second. UConn added to its lead in the third with Hill ripping and RBI single into center to plate Krueger. Susi added a sacrifice fly and the Huskies held a 3-0 advantage.
The lead disappeared in the fourth when Tanner Allison hit a three-run homer to right field to knot up the game, 3-3. The long ball ended the day for UConn starter Sam Nepiarsky as right-hander Dan Rajkowski (New Canaan, Conn.) came into the ballgame for the Huskies. Rajkowski threw three scoreless innings of relief, scattering two hits and striking out a pair.
Ryan Radue (Appleton, Wisc.) followed with two innings of work, allowing one hit and striking out three. Radue and the Huskies almost escaped a jam in the eighth but an error led to the go-ahead run coming around to score for the Broncos.
CJ Dandeaneu (North Smithfield, R.I.) finished the game by striking out the side in his one inning of work in the ninth.
Hill finished the day going 2-3, contributing all three runs for the Huskies.
