DAVIS, Calif. - A three-run ninth inning spurred the Huskies to a thrilling 7-4 win over UC Davis on Friday afternoon at Dobbins Field.
Freshman Conor Moriarty (West Springfield, Mass.) broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth inning with an RBI double down the left field line. The double was the second two-bagger of the day for Moriarty who finished 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs on his 19th birthday.
Anthony Prato (Staten Island, N.Y.) added to the one-run advantage with an RBI double of his own to plate Moriarty. Prato had a stellar day at the dish, going 3-5 with three RBIs and provided clutch knocks throughout the contest. Trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning, Prato delivered an RBI double into the right field corner to even the score. During the seventh inning, Prato produced an RBI single to knot the game up at 4-4.
Willy Yahn (Sharon, Conn.) returned to the lineup for the first time this year for the Huskies and made his impact felt. Yahn singled and came around to score the first run of the ballgame in the first on an RBI single from Isaac Feldstein (Palo Alto, Calif.). The junior provided an insurance run in the ninth, driving in Prato from second on an RBI single to right, making it 7-4 Huskies.
The UConn bullpen got the job done on Friday, pitching six innings of relief and only yielding one run. CJ Dandeneau (North Smithfield, R.I.) earned his first career victory, pitching a scoreless eighth inning for the Huskies. John Russell (Glastonbury, Conn.) pitched the ninth inning and earned his fourth save of the season.
Redshirt-senior Ryan Radue (Appleton, Wisc.) contributed with a two-inning stint, giving up just two hits and striking out three. Radue has pitched eight-straight innings without allowing an earned run.
The victory moves the Huskies to 7-4 on the season and give UConn an opportunity to claim the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. PST. Wills Montgomerie (3-0) takes the mound for the Huskies. The game can be heard on 91.7 FM WHUS or online at fm.whus.org.
- CJ Dandeneau picked up his first career victory out of the bullpen. Dandeneau has started the year with 5.2 scoreless innings.
- Willy Yahn returned to the lineup for the first time this season. The junior third baseman went 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Freshman Anthony Prato and Conor Moriarty both notched their second three-hit efforts of the season. Also notching the first two-double performances of their young careers. The duo combined to go 6-8 with four doubles, 6 RBI and four runs scored.
- Ryan Radue has thrown eight-straight innings without allowing an earned run.
