CORVALLIS, Ore. – The University of Connecticut baseball team pulled out a 6-3 win over Oregon State at the NIKE Showcase at Goss Stadium, Saturday night. The Huskies trailed 3-1 after the fourth inning and scored runs in four straight innings to come from behind and move to 6-7 on the season, while the Beavers dropped to 10-5.
UConn tied the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning on back-to-back doubles by redshirt-senior DH Joe Pavone (Rochester, N.Y.) and freshman catcher Alex DeBellis (Kinnelon, N.J.). The Huskies took their first lead of the night in the seventh on a two-run homerun from junior second baseman LJ Mazzilli (Greenwich, Conn.), his second homer of the season.
The Connecticut bullpen pitched 5.2 innings of shutout ball, while giving up just five hits and one walk. Senior righty David Fischer (Scotia, N.Y.) lasted 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out three to earn the win and improve to 1-2 on the season. Redshirt-junior righty Scott Oberg (Tewksbury, Mass.) picked up his third save of the season, each coming in the last three UConn wins.
Redshirt-freshman RHP Jordan Tabakman (Pompton, Plains, N.J.)
pitched 3.1 innings in his second start of the season. He gave up three runs on two hits and five walks, while striking out four.
For OSU, freshman lefty Jace Fry started and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, gave up two hits and three walks. Junior righty reliever Cole Brocker fell to 0-2 with the loss in a two-inning effort.
At the plate, freshman left fielder Eric Yavarone (North Haven, Conn.) went 2-5 with a run and two RBI out of the lead-off spot. Mazzilli and sophomore shortstop Tom Verdi (Warwick, R.I.) each went 2-4, while DeBellis went 1-2 with a run and two RBI.
Freshman DH Michael Conforto led the Beaver lineup with two hits in five at-bats to go with a pair of RBI.
The Huskies are back in action on Sunday afternoon against No. 10 Oregon at 3:00 pm Pacific time. Sophomore lefty Anthony Marzi (Berlin, Conn.) starts for UConn against freshman lefty Brando Tessar.
