GREENVILLE, S.C. - Jon Testani hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to lift the UConn baseball team (10-6) to a 3-1 win over Michigan State (7-9) on Sunday at Fluor Field. The contest the final of three for UConn at the 2015 BB&T College Baseball Series, with the Hukies going 3-0 on the weekend.
Testani (Monroe, Conn.) led the Husky offense with a 2-for-3 day, driving in two and scoring a run. Max McDowell (North Huntingdon, Pa.) went 2-for-4 and Bobby Melley (Barnstable, Mass.) had a double and scored a run. Bryan Daniello (Norwalk, Conn.) also added an RBI for Connecticut.
On the mound, Jordan Tabakman (Pompton Plains, N.J.) got the start and was strong, firing seven innings of one-run ball off four hits with two strikeouts and two walks. He was opposed by Cam Vieaux who was excellent for the Spartans, going 6.1 innings and allowing a run (unearned) off four hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts.
"That's the kind of win you can grow with," UConn skipper Jim Penders said. "It shows some toughness, some grit and some belief in each other."
The Spartans scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Chad Roskelly. The Huskies evened the score at 1-1 in the next half inning, when Melley led off with a double and scored on a Daniello sacrifice fly.
Neither team could get anything going after the early stages of the contest, with the Huskies chasing Vieuax and loading the bases in the top of the seventh. Joe Mocbkee came out of the pen for the Spartans in the frame and was able to strand three Huskies to keep the contest tied.
Tabakman left after seven strong innings, and the Spartans put runners on second and third in the eighth before Patrick Ruotolo (Peabody, Mass.) came out of the pen for the Huskies. Ruotolo worked out of the jam by picking up a strikeout and inducing a popout to end the frame.
Joe DeRoche-Duffin (Santa Ana, Calif.) led off the top of the ninth with a single, and Taylor Olmstead (Greenwich, Conn.) came on as a pinch-runner before moving into scoring position with a sacrifice. With two away in the frame, Testani crushed a 1-0 pitch deep over the left field wall to put the Huskies on top.
Ruotolo returned for the bottom of the ninth and fired a 1-2-3 inning, picking up a strikeout to secure his first win of 2015. Ruotolo set down all five batters he faced in 1.2 scoreless innings.
