Nick Ahmed went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one home run to lift the University of Connecticut baseball team over Boston College 8-4 in the Huskies' 2010 home-opener on Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
After Boston College took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Ahmed led the Huskies' charge in the bottom of the frame as UConn took a 4-3 advantage. Junior Pierre LePage led off UConn's offensive half of the inning with a double to right center before scoring on Ahmed's second home run of the year to cut the Eagles' lead to one.
George Springer earned his first of three walks in today's contest in the first inning before stealing second and then advancing to third on a Mike Nemeth fly out to center. He later scored on an RBI single by freshman LJ Mazzilli to tie the game at three. The Huskies added another run on a Joe Pavone RBI single through the right side of the infield to take the lead.
Bob Van Woert struggled in today's contest, going 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, three runs and five walks as he hit four batters. Mike Zaccardo came in from the bullpen and threw a solid 3.1 innings of work as he allowed three hits, one run and one walk, while striking out two.
In the top of the fourth inning, Van Woert walked two batters, threw a wild pitch and hit another batter to load the bases with two outs. Zaccardo came in for the redshirt junior and was able to get Anthony Melchionda to strike out to end the inning with UConn a head 5-3.
UConn added three more runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead as LePage led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. He moved into scoring position after a failed pick off attempt before scoring on an Ahmed single into left field. Ahmed also scored on an RBI single by Nemeth before Springer crossed the plate as well.
Both Dan Feehan and Ahmed threw one inning for the Huskies as Feehan made his fifth appearance on the mound for UConn while Ahmed made just the first of his career. Both faced three batters a piece, while Ahmed struck out the Eagles' Matt Watson to end the game. Zaccardo earned his first career victory for the Huskies in today's contest, while Boston College's Dane Clemens fell to 1-1 with the loss. Clemens went three innings and allowed 10 hits, eight runs and two walks.
LePage finished today's contest with two hits and two runs in five at-bats, while Mazzilli added two hits and two RBI. Both Pavone and redshirt freshman Billy Ferriter added two hits and one RBI as well.
UConn recorded 12 hits in today's game, while recording four steals and six walks.
UConn will return to action on Friday, March 19 as they travel to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. for a 3:30 p.m. contest against Sacred Heart University.
