CONWAY, S.C. – In a re-match of last season’s NCAA Regional, the University of Connecticut baseball team fell to Coastal Carolina, 6-2, in game two of the CCU Classic at Watson Stadium on Saturday afternoon. For the Huskies, it was their third straight loss as they dropped to 6-10, while the Chanticleers improved to 11-6.
UConn and Coastal last met in the 2011 NCAA Regional in Clemson, S.C. The Huskies fell in the opener, 13-1, and later eliminated the Chanticleers, 7-6.
Junior righty Josh Conway started for CCU and kept Connecticut scoreless in six innings of work as he improved to 2-1. Conway allowed just two hits and struck out one. UConn sophomore lefty Anthony Marzi (Berlin, Conn.) is still in search of his first win of the season, as his record moved to 0-4. Marzi gave up three runs in seven innings on five hits and one walk, while striking out five.
Junior second baseman LJ Mazzilli (Greenwich, Conn.) homered for the second straight day, his fourth of the season. Mazzilli’s hitting streak is now at seven games as he went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored, having not hit in 15 out of 16 games.
For the second straight game, junior center fielder Billy Ferriter (Nashua, N.H.) collected two hits.
9-7, with three different players recording a multi-hit game. Senior right fielder Daniel Bowman went 2-4 with a run and a RBI.
The Huskies wrap up the classic with an 11:00 am game against Michigan. Freshman lefty Jared Dettman (Somerset, Wis.) is scheduled to make his first collegiate start.
