BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The University of Connecticut baseball team registered a pair of four-run innings in a 15-3 victory at Sacred Heart on Friday. Sophomore George Springer (New Britain, Conn.) had a game-high five RBI in the first of a three-game weekend series with the Pioneers. Springer was 2-for-4 en route to his five-RBI performance, including a home run in the first inning.
The Huskies scored two or more runs in five innings at Sacred Heart and opened the game with at three-run effort in the first. Springer homered to right field in his first at bat with sophomore Nick Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Pierre LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) both on base. LePage was on third when Springer hit his fourth homer of the season, turning the corner on Ahmed's single.
Junior Elliot Glynn (Long Beach, Calif.) allowed a single hit in the first three innings, with Sacred Heart's Steve Tedesco hitting a single to left in the first. Tedesco was one of just three Pioneers to record two hits on Friday.
Connecticut followed its first inning efforts with the first of two four-run innings in the top of the second. LePage hit an RBI double after sophomore John Andreoli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) singled to left field. LePage would later score after Ahmed popped up to second base. Junior Mike Nemeth (Washington, N.J.) hit a two-run homer for the 7-0 UConn lead.
Nemeth was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI against the Pioneers while LePage ended the day with a 2-for-3 effort, scoring three runs. Ahmed was also 2-for-3, scoring one run at Sacred Heart.
Springer hit an RBI double in the top of the fourth to bring LePage home for his third run scored against the Pioneers. Springer scored on a single to center by junior Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) with two outs before Sacred Heart collected a line drive for the final out. The Huskies led 9-0 after four innings.
The Huskies scored two runs on a pair of hits in the top of the sixth with Olt driving in a run on a single and Springer scoring on a fielder's choice for the 11-0 lead. Olt ended the day with a 3-for-6 effort, driving in a pair of runs.
It was not until the bottom of the sixth inning that the Pioneers got on the board with a pair of runs. A sacrifice fly by Rob Griffith gave Sacred Heart its first run of the game while Jeff Heppner hit an RBI single to make it an 11-2 contest.
Each team managed a single hit in the seventh inning with Glynn ending his day allowing four hits and two runs. He struck out five batters for his second win of the season.
Freshman Pat Butler (Chatham, N.J.) stepped in to start the bottom of the eighth after the Huskies' put up another four runs with a single hit in the top half of the inning. Butler walked one batter and stuck out another after facing four.
The Huskies were held without a hit in the final inning while freshman Stephen Catalina (Wolcott, Conn.) allowed a home run by Heppner to end the day in the ninth.
UConn continues the weekend series with Sacred Heart on Saturday at J.O. Christian Field at 1 p.m.
