SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Competing in its final game of an eight-game road trip, the UConn baseball team dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 21 UCSB on Sunday at Uyesaka Stadium. With the loss, Connecticut falls to 9-9 overall, while the Gauchos jump to 15-3.
Junior DH Tyler Gnesda (Laguna Nigel, Calif.) notched a two-hit afternoon, finishing 2-for-3, while senior co-captain Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.) reached base two times with an RBI and a stolen base in the setback.
Freshman righty Ronnie Rossomando (Stratford, Conn.) went 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with a strikeout. His counterpart Joe Record (3-1) picked up the win after tossing 7.0 innings of two-run ball.
Senior Connor Buckley (Stonington, Conn.), who earned his second start of the season, gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the second after he picked up an RBI groundout to plate Sundberg.
The Gauchos struck back in the second when Josh Adams launched a two-out, two-run homer to jump ahead, 2-1. An inning later, JJ Munuo added a solo shot to push the USCB advantage to 3-1. The team added a run in the fourth and two unearned in the fifth to stretch the lead to 6-1.
The Huskies cut the deficit to 6-2 in the seventh after Sundberg notched a sac fly. After freshman duo of Zac Susi (Southington, Conn.) and John Toppa (Portsmouth, R.I.) notched back-to-back hits with one down, Sundberg lifted a fly ball to left to record his seventh RBI of the season.
Connecticut drops to 0-3 all-time against the Gauchos and finishes its eight-game West Coast road trip at 3-5.
Connecticut resumes midweek play on Wednesday, March 23 when it hosts in-state rival CCSU at J.O. Christian Field for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
