MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - George Springer and Nick Ahmed hit back-to-back home runs to lead the Huskies in a five-run sixth inning to eventually take down West Virginia 9-5 at Hawley Field in Morgantown, W. Va. on Thursday night.
Joe Pavone hit a two-out single up the middle to begin a UConn(14-7, 2-2 BIG EAST) rally as the Huskies entered the sixth inning down 2-1. Freshman LJ Mazzilli followed Pavone with a double down the left field line to put runners into scoring position before John Andreoli hit a shot up the middle to give UConn a 3-2 lead over the Mountaineers (13-12, 2-2 BIG EAST).
Springer then hit his fifth homer of the season to give UConn a 5-2 advantage before Ahmed smacked one out on his own for his fourth of the season.
Elliot Glynn finished the night after seven innings of work as he struck out three and allowed eight hits and three runs. He earned the win, to improve to 3-2 on the year. Kevin Vance picked up his fourth save of the season as he went 1.1 innings, allowing no hits, while striking out one batter.
Andreoli finished the game with three RBI as his infield single in the top of the ninth capped off the night. Mazzilli also had an RBI in the ninth inning with his second double of the game.
Springer finished the contest 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Pavone was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Andreoli added a two-hit performance and one run to his three-RBI presentation.
West Virginia's Andy Berry took the loss to drop to 1-2 on the year as he threw 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs and three walks, while striking out six.
UConn returns to action on Friday, April 2 against the Mountaineers in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
