GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Huskies captured a 3-2 win over No. 16/25 East Carolina at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Friday evening.
Tim Cate pitched brilliantly for the Huskies with 7 innings pitched, gave up one unearned run and tied a career-high with 13 strikeouts.
UConn (14-9) took the initial lead in the sixth, Chris Winkel (Orange, Conn.) led off the inning with a base hit to right and was bunted to second by Keith Krueger (Las Vegas, Nev.). Freshman Anthony Prato grounded a base hit back up the middle to bring in Winkel from second, making it 1-0.
UConn took the lead for good in the eighth; Krueger delivered an RBI double down the left field to make it 2-1 UConn. Willy Yahn (Sharon, Conn.) added a two-out, RBI single to center field.
After a 51-minute lightning delay in the bottom of the eighth, John Russell came into the ballgame to record a five-out save.
Russell struck out five in his 1.2 innings of work to seal his eighth save of the year. The Huskies ended the night striking out 19 batters.
Winkel started both rallies for the Huskies in the sixth and eighth innings, notching his first multi-hit of his career.
The Huskies and Pirates resume the series Saturday, April 1 at 4 p.m. Wills Montgomerie (4-1) makes his seventh start of the year for the Huskies.
