STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut baseball team scored five runs in its first time at-bat and never looked back, defeating Yale, 14-1, on Wednesday at J.O. Christian Field. With the win, the Huskies improve to 13-13 this season, while the Bulldogs fall to 9-12.
Blake Davey (Newport Beach, Calif.) paced the Husky offense, collecting three hits and driving in four runs, including a three-run home run. Bobby Melley (Barnstable, Mass.) added three hits of his own and was one of ten Huskies to record either an RBI or score a run.
Making his first start since March 14, redshirt-junior Jordan Tabakman (Pompton Plains, N.J.) tossed 2.0 innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk and picked up his second win of the year. The Huskies used five more pitchers on the afternoon, who combined to allow just five hits and one run over the final seven innings.
For the Bulldogs, junior lefty Eric Hsieh made his first start of the season and took the loss, finishing with a line of 1.0 innings, seven hits, six runs (four earned) and one walk.
Connecticut opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with five runs, cashing in on a leadoff double from Bryan Daniello (Norwalk, Conn.). Davey sent a ringing single up the middle to plate Daniello, and came around to score later in the inning on a throwing error by the shortstop. Eric Yavarone (North Haven, Conn.) extended the UConn lead to 3-0 with a single to left field, scoring Melley, who reached on a single earlier in the inning.
(North Huntingdon, Pa.) and Nico Darras
(Laguna Beach, Calif.) each added an RBI to push the UConn lead to 5-0 after one frame.
The Huskies tacked on another run in the second inning, capitalizing on back-to-back doubles from Davey and Melley. Davey added to his stellar day in the home half of the fifth inning when blasted a three-run home run to deep left field. For Davey, the round tripper marked his team-leading fourth homer of the year.
The Huskies added four runs in the sixth, highlighted by two-run single from Vinny Siena (Woodbridge, Conn.). Callahan Brown (Jupiter, Fla.) made his first appearance in a Husky uniform as the fifth UConn pitcher of the day, finishing off the final two innings.
