Final Stats

NORWICH, Conn. – The UConn baseball team surrendered a run in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth to drop a 5-3 decision to Bryant on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2014 Dodd Stadium College Baseball Classic. The loss drops the Huskies to 13-16 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 18-9 after going 3-1 in the tournament.

Blake Davey (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored two of UConn’s three runs, going 1-for-2 with two walks in the setback. The Huskies were out-hit 8-3 on the day, and didn’t record an RBI.

UConn gave the ball to Jordan Tabakman (Pompton Plains, N.J.) for his first weekend start since March 14, and Tabakman allowed two runs on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Kyle Wilcox started for Bryant and lasted six innings, allowing three runs (earned) on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

The Huskies drew first blood, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. After Davey drew a one-out walk, he stole second and scored on an error to give UConn a 1-0 lead.

Tabakman cruised through the middle innings before he ran into trouble in the top of the sixth. After walking a pair of batters to open the frame, he picked up a strikeout before both runners moved up a base on. Max Slade (Cheshire, Conn.) entered out of the pen, and Bryant got a run on an RBI groundout before a wild pitch made it 2-1.

The Huskies answered in their half of the inning, using alert base-running to take a 3-2 lead. With runners on second and third, Wilcox uncorked a wild pitch, easily allowing Bryan Daniello (Norwalk, Conn.) to score from third. Davey moved up to third on the play, and scampered for home with Wilcox’s back turned to score to go-ahead run.

Bryant tied the score against David Mahoney (Colchester, Conn.) in the top of the eight, Mahoney’s second inning of work. The Bulldogs worked the bases loaded against the UConn lefty, who plunked Daniel Palazzo to drive in a run.

Davey led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, and moved as far as third but the Huskies couldn’t bring him in. The Bulldogs rang out four hits against Mahoney (1-2) in the top of the ninth, plating a pair of runs to go up 5-3. Devin Over (Windsor, Conn.) entered out of the pen with one away, and got a lineout double play ball to limit further damage.

Brandon Bingel (1-1) remained on for his third inning of work for Bryant in the ninth, and tossed a clean inning to pick up his first win of the year.

UConn returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Northeastern for a midweek game in Brookline, Mass. First pitch between the two sets of Huskies is set for 3 p.m.
