SOUTH BEND, Ind. - George Springer hit his fourth home run of the season to lift the UConn baseball team over Notre Dame 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
UConn (17-10-1, 7-1 BIG EAST) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning as Springer hit a two-run shot over the left field wall. Fellow teammate Nick Ahmed scored on Springer's 38th career home run after reaching base on a five-pitch walk.
Springer's homer moves him into a tie for third place among UConn's all-time home run leaders. Brian Packin (1997-2000) shares the spot with the UConn junior. Notre Dame (12-16-1, 3-5 BIG EAST) scored first with a run in the opening frame before tying the game at two in the bottom of the fourth.
The Huskies scored the game-winning run in the fifth as they tallied a three-run fifth inning led by junior Ryan Fuller. Fuller hit his second triple of the season as he took a 1-1 pitch and hit it into the gap in left center. Two scored on the play as Ahmed and senior Mike Nemeth crossed the plate for the Huskies. Ahmed was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before stealing second to get into scoring position.
Nemeth walked to put runners on first and second before scoring on Fuller's triple. Fuller later scored on a John Andreoli sacrifice fly, his fourth of the season.
After Notre Dame cut the UConn lead to two at 5-3 in the seventh, the Huskies secured the victory with their sixth run of the contest in the top of the ninth. Nemeth walked to lead off the frame then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fuller. Doug Elliot chipped in with his 10th RBI of the year as his single to center scored Nemeth from second.
Elliot Glynn picked up the win, his second of the year, to improve to 2-4 this season. The senior threw five innings, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out one batter. Will Jolin replaced Glynn in the sixth and threw two innings. Jolin allowed one unearned run, walked one and struck out one batter as he faced 10 on the afternoon.
Dan Feehan made his 12th appearance of the year as he threw the eighth for the Huskies. Feehan faced three batters and allowed one hit. Kevin Vance picked up his second straight save and his fifth of the season as he closed out the game for the Huskies. Vance retired all three batters faced in the ninth to secure UConn's seventh consecutive victory.
Notre Dame's Cole Johnson took the loss, dropping to 2-5 on the year. Johnson went 4.1 innings, allowing five earned runs, four hits and three walks, while striking out six Huskies.
Springer finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Elliot tallied a 3-for-4 performance. Fuller also had two hits and two RBI for UConn.
