Huskies Lose 14-4 to Notre Dame in Series' Finale

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The UConn baseball team fell to Notre Dame 14-4 in its BIG EAST series finale on Sunday afternoon led by a five-run first inning by the Irish.

Notre Dame (13-16-1, 4-5 BIG EAST) took a 5-0 lead after one complete inning as UConn recorded three of its six errors in the first frame. The Huskies, who drop to 17-11-1 overall and 7-2 in league play with the loss, scored four runs on 12 hits during the BIG EAST showdown.

The Irish added four more runs in the third inning, led by a lead-off home run by Trey Mancini. They extended their lead with four more runs in the seventh to pull away.

UConn starting hurler Greg Nappo took the loss, falling to 3-2 on the year, as he went 2.2 innings, while allowing nine runs, three of which were earned, five hits and two walks.

Nick Ahmed scored the Huskies' first two runs of the ballgame in the fourth and sixth innings. Ahmed crossed the plate on a fielder's choice by John Andreoli in the fourth to score UConn's first run of the afternoon as he reached base on a lead-off single, his 32nd hit of the season. In the sixth, Ahmed led off the frame once again with a base hit then scored on a Ryan Fuller double to center field.

The Irish added four runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 14-2 as UConn threw four pitchers in today's contest. David Fischer went 2.1 innings as he allowed four hits, one run and one walk, while Ryan Moore took the hill in the sixth and gave up four runs, two hits and two walks in 1.2 innings of work. Stephen Catalina was the Huskies' fourth hurler in the ballgame as he allowed two hits in 1.1 innings.



UConn put up two more runs in the eighth to make the score 14-4 but Notre Dame was able to close the game out for the league victory. In the top of the eighth, Mike Nemeth doubled down the right field line to score George Springer for the Huskies' third run of the contest. They added another run as Fuller singled to center to register his second RBI of the afternoon.

Ahmed finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Fuller went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Both Springer and Nemeth added two hits and one run, respectively. The two teams combined for 25 hits in today's contest, while the Huskies committed six errors.

Notre Dame's Todd Miller went 6.2 innings to earn the win, his third of the season. Miller gave up eight hits, two runs and one walk.

UConn will return to action on Tuesday, April 12 with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference match-up with Yale in West Haven, Conn.
