STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team downed Brown 6-2 in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs. The Huskies were led by a solid outing from sophomore Pat Butler as he went seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs.
The Huskies (18-12-1) took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as both Nick Ahmed and LJ Mazzilli scored unearned runs. Mazzilli led off the frame with a single then scored from first on a bad throw by Brown's third baseman, Cody Slaughter. Slaughter made a diving play at third on a sharp hit by Ahmed but his throw to first missed the mark, advancing Mazzilli across the plate and Ahmed to third. Ahmed also scored later in the frame, on a George Springer infield single.
Brown (6-19) tied the ballgame at two in the second inning as a single, walk and hit batter loaded the bases for the Bears. Brown's first run of the contest came on a single to right by Matt DeRenzi before a sacrifice bunt sent the second Bears' runner across home plate.
UConn opened up the game in the fourth with three runs to take a 5-2 lead, led by an RBI single from Doug Elliot and a two-run base hit by Mazzilli. Junior Ryan Fuller led off the frame with a single to center then moved to second on a bunt single by John Andreoli.
With runners on second and third after a wild pitch, Elliot connected on his 31st hit of the season to score the Huskies' third run of the contest.
With two outs, Mazzilli hit a two-run single to right field to extend UConn's lead to 5-2. The Huskies tallied their sixth run of the game in the seventh on an RBI single by Mike Nemeth. Ahmed forced a one-out walk before stealing second, his 17th theft this season. The junior shortstop tagged up on a deep fly ball hit to right field by Springer then later scored on Nemeth's team-leading 42nd hit of the year.
Butler (1-1), who faced 27 batters in the contest, walked three and struck out two in his second start of the season. Ryan Moore took the hill in the eighth and finished out the game for the Huskies as he retired all six batters faced, while striking out two.
Mazzilli finished the contest 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI, while Springer was 1-for-4 with one RBI. His lone hit of the contest improved his current hit streak to 10 games.
Nemeth added two hits and an RBI for the Huskies, while Elliot chipped in with one hit and one RBI.
Brown threw eight pitchers as Chris Hubbard (0-2) took the loss, his second of the season. Hubbard allowed three hits and three runs in 0.1 innings of work.
