Zapata Twirls Seven Shutotut Frames In 7-0 Win At Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Andrew Zapata fired seven scoreless innings to pace the UConn baseball team to a 7-0 victory at Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The win improves to Huskies to 23-13 on the year, while the Stags drop to 7-21.

Zapata (Staten Island, N.Y.) tied his season-long with seven innings and allowed only four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. The sophomore did not allow a baserunner with less than two outs throughout his outing. Kyle Dube got the start for Fairfield and allowed a run on a hit with two walks and three strikeouts in three innings of work.

The Huskies were led at the dish by a 3-for-4 day from Aaron Hill (Groton, Conn.), who also scored and drove in a run. Vinny Siena (Woodbridge, Conn.) went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs and Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.) went 1-for-4 with a walk, a run and a stolen base from the leadoff spot.

UConn got on the board in the top of the third, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to a double and stolen base from Hill before an RBI groundout for Siena. The Huskies tacked on two more in the next inning, using an RBI groundout from Bryan Daniello (Norwalk, Conn.) before Hill drove in a run with an RBI single to make a it a three-run game.

Blake Davey (Newport Beach, Calif.) helped to manufacture another run in the fifth, driving in Siena with a fielder's choice to make it a 4-0 game. UConn put up two more with some clutch two-out hitting in the top of the sixth when Sundberg and Siena both notched RBI singles with two away to stretch the lead to six.



Zapata exited after a perfect bottom of the seventh, his fourth 1-2-3 inning of the day. After Samuel Nepiarsky (Orange, Conn.) tossed a clean eighth, Siena doubled and scored in the top of the ninth to push the lead to seven. Callahan Brown (Jupiter, Fla.) made his second appearance of the season in the bottom of the final frame and worked around a one-out single to close the contest.

Up next, the Huskies head to Rhode Island for a 3 p.m. showdown with the Bulldogs of Bryant. The contest will mark the eighth all-time meeting between the two programs.
