STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut baseball team downed Brown 10-6 in non-conference play on Wednesday afternoon as Harold Brantley Jr led the Huskies with a 3-for-4 performance with three runs scored and two RBI.
The Huskies, now 19-15 on the year, scored five runs in the first two innings, led by a four-run second inning to defeat the Bears as Brown falls to 15-16-1 overall. Matt Burnett also had a stellar outing for the Huskies as he finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with five RBI.
UConn scored the first run of the game as Brantley led off the bottom of the first inning with a double down the left field line. He moved over to third base as senior Dale Brannon grounded out to second before scoring on a ground out from Burnett. Brantley's run put the Huskies up 1-0 early in the contest as it was his 21st run scored this season.
The second inning saw the Huskies pick up four runs off four hits, including a two RBI triple by Brantley. Brown finally got on the board in the fourth inning then added another run in the sixth inning to cut the UConn lead to 7-2. Matt Nuzzo homered off Dennis Accomando in the seventh inning to pull the Bears to within three runs at 7-4.
The Huskies threw four pitchers in today's contest as Matt McDonald earned the win as he allowed just two runs, one earned, and seven hits in six innings. His overall record this season improves to 3-0 as he has struck out 24 batters in seven appearances, including five starts. Dusty Odenbach threw the eighth inning for UConn as he walked two batters while striking out one.
UConn threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning as a walk and a hit batter put runners on first and second with one out. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Brown's Matthew Kimball before the Bears' reliever walked Brannon to load the bases with two outs. Burnett continued to connect for the Huskies as he hit a rocket to short to score two and put the Huskies up 9-4 before a passed ball scored UConn's 10th run of the ballgame.
Senior David Erickson took the hill in the ninth inning and allowed two hits and two runs before closing out the game for the Huskies to clinch the 10-6 victory.
Joe Pavone added two hits and two runs scored for the Huskies.
Brown's Conor Burke started for his team and took the loss as he allowed seven hits and five runs in 3.2 innings of work before coming out of the game with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth.
UConn will begin a five-game home stand in five days starting on Friday, April 17 with a 3:00 p.m. game against Georgetown. The Huskies' BIG EAST series against the Hoyas will take place Friday-Sunday at J.O. Christian Field.
