STORRS, Conn. - An offensive outburst in the seventh inning distanced the Huskies to an 11-3 victory over UMass on Tuesday afternoon.
Leading 4-1 in the seventh inning, the Huskies poured on seven runs in the frame to break the game open. The Huskies received five RBIs from the freshmen trio of Chris Winkel, Kenny Bergmann and Anthony Prato.
Winkel (Orange, Conn.) had a career-day at the dish, recording a three-hit game and finishing the day with two doubles and three RBIs.
The offensive explosion today included a season-high 18 hits with eight Huskies compiling multi-hit perfromances.
P.J. Poulin delivered an outstanding start for the Huskies. Poulin notched his first career win with a five-inning performance and five strikeouts. The innings pitched and strikeouts are career-best totals for Poulin.
With the game still tight, 4-1, Trevor Holmes was unhittable on the hill. The right-hander retired all six batters that he faced including a career-high four strikeouts.
UConn moves to 5-1 at home this season. UConn is set to play 13 of its final 20 scheduled games at J.O. Christian Field.
