STORRS, Conn. - Matt Barnes pitched his third complete-game shutout of the season as the UConn baseball team cruised to a 5-0 win over Georgetown in BIG EAST Conference action on Thursday afternoon in Storrs.
Barnes (8-2) struck out eight batters and allowed five hits as he picked up his eighth straight win and the 21st of his career.
With the win, UConn improves to 11-2 in BIG EAST Conference play and 24-12-1 overall, while Georgetown drops to 2-11 in league action and 19-20 on the year. Mike Nemeth led the Huskies at the plate as he homered for the third time of the season to give UConn a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open UConn's scoring. His 24th career homer was sent over the right field wall as the senior finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with two RBI.
George Springer, who is currently on a 16-game hit streak, led the Huskies in a two-run sixth inning as he gave UConn a 2-0 lead with an RBI double off the right field wall, his team-leading 17th two-bagger of the season.
Sophomore LJ Mazzilli scored on Springer's 47th hit of the season. Mazzilli led off the inning with a double to left center before moving to third on a Nick Ahmed groundout to second. Nemeth's second hit of the ballgame plated Springer from third to extend UConn's lead to three.
In the seventh inning, Ahmed's single to centerfield scored two more Huskies as both Doug Elliot and Billy Ferriter scored to give UConn a 5-0 advantage. Mazzilli went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with one run scored, while Ahmed finished with a hit and two RBI.
Georgetown's Thomas Polus took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year as he went 5.1 innings, giving up seven of UConn's 10 total hits and three runs.
UConn will host Georgetown in a double-header on Friday afternoon at New Britain Stadium in New Britain, Conn.
