SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Matt Burnett used a bases loaded single to center field to score the Huskies' game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning as the University of Connecticut baseball team defeated Notre Dame 8-5 in BIG EAST Conference action on Friday night in South Bend, Ind.
With the victory, the Huskies' record improves to 26-20 overall and 9-10 in conference play. Notre Dame falls to 26-18 on the year and 10-9 in the BIG EAST. Notre Dame took an early 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning as a two-out single by Mick Doyle scored both AJ Pollack and Golden Tate. The Fighting Irish added two more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-0 lead as Notre Dame connected on three hits.
The Huskies cut the Notre Dame lead to two at 4-2 as a fielding error by Casey Martin at first base scored both Burnett and Ahmed.
UConn then used a three-run sixth inning to take the 5-4 lead as Burnett singled home Springer before scoring on a base hit to center by Ahmed. Junior Peter Fatse, who walked to reach base, was able to score on a single down the left field line by Pavone.
The Fighting Irish tied the ballgame at five in the bottom of the sixth as Doyle earned his way on base on a Dale Brannon error. A Brayden Ashdown triple scored Doyle to knot the game at five.
John Folino earned the win, his team-leading sixth of the season as he allowed eight hits and five runs in 6.2 innings of work, while he struck out five batters. Dusty Odenbach threw a solid 1.1 innings as he allowed just one hit and no runs as he struck out three of the seven batters he faced.
David Erickson picked up his eighth save of the season as he gave up one hit and no runs in the one frame thrown.
Burnett sparked the seventh inning rally as his base hit to center field clinched the Huskies BIG EAST Conference victory.
Burnett finished the night 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Pavone also had three hits with one RBI. Springer added two hits and two runs as Ahmed chipped in with two runs and two hits as well.
UConn will continue its road trip in South Bend, Ind. on Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. match-up against Notre Dame.
