NORWICH, Conn. - Matt Barnes struck out 10 in eight innings as the No. 20 UConn baseball team edged South Florida 2-1 in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn.
With tonight's win, UConn improves to 32-13-1 on the year and 16-3 in league action. South Florida falls to 22-23 overall and 11-8 in BIG EAST Conference play.
A two-run sixth inning lifted the Huskies to victory as Ryan Fuller led the charge with his 39th RBI of the season as his single through the left side of the infield scored George Springer to give UConn a 1-0 lead. Tim Martin followed with his 26th hit of the year as Fuller scored on the play extending the Huskies' advantage to two.
South Florida's lone run of the game came in the top of the eighth as James Ramsay scored on a wild pitch to cut UConn's lead to 2-1.
Barnes struck out 10 and gave up just three hits in his ninth win of the season. Kevin Vance took over on the hill in the ninth to close out the game for the Huskies. He retired the side, while striking out two, in his 19th appearance of the season.
John Andreoli finished the night 2-for-4 as he extended his hit streak to 17 games. Springer added a 2-for-3 performance, while Fuller had one hit, one RBI and one run scored.
UConn will host USF on Sunday, May 8 in a 2:00 p.m. contest at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, Conn.
