UConn Post Game Quotes

Head Coach Jim Penders

Opening statement:

“It’s incredibly hard to see the guys that just played the last game in our uniform. They gave every drop of energy and sweat and tears to the program over the years. They left it better than they found it. It’s very difficult just to look them in the eye with the finale of it. You’ve got to tip your hat to Georgia Tech. They did a great job against us. They swung the bats really well. We didn’t get them much for free until the very end of the ballgame. They gave us a lot more than we gave them, and we cashed in on some of them. I tip my cap to Coach (Danny) Hall and to the Yellow Jackets. They deserve to move on. I’m very proud of the way that our guys competed throughout the season, especially in the last three or four weeks and in this tournament. To leave as American (Athletic Conference tournament) champions, I think they obviously left the program in good shape for moving forward.”

On UConn battling throughout the game:

“We pride ourselves on having grit and determination. That’s something that you have to have at UConn, and we’re proud of that. We’re proud of our work ethic and where that comes from. The university was founded by farmers, and it’s no longer just an agricultural college – it’s a world-class institution with scholars and is one of the top-20 public institutions in the country, and we’re very, very proud of that. But we like to think that we come from a blue-collar work ethic, and that’s in our DNA. We’re not afraid to get our hands dirty. You see that from No. 6 (Willy Yahn), No. 4 (Jack Sundberg) -- I could go up and down the lineup -- and on the mound with the way we compete. That’s a compliment whenever somebody calls us gritty and determined. If we have nothing else, we’re going to have that, as long as I’m the head coach.”

#31 Sophomore Pitcher William Montgomerie

On UConn’s response to Georgia Tech’s five-run fourth inning:

“They’ve (UConn) been unbelievable the past month or so. We got down, and they just kept battling every inning. They wouldn’t stop. This is a very resilient group, and that’s what I love about our team, coming down the end of the stretch. We did that today, and we were just a couple more outs away.”

On his pitching performance today:

“They got to me in that fourth inning pretty well. The first two or three innings, I was able to locate my fastball, but by that fourth inning, I was leaving them middle. They did a good job staying with it and staying back on my curveball. Hats off to them for doing that.”
