STORRS, Conn. – Junior left-hander Tim Cate was recognized as a Second Team Preseason All-American by D1Baseball.com on Tuesday morning. The most recent honor adds to a long list of preseason acknowledgement for the Manchester, Conn. native.
Cate picks up his second Preseason All-American nod after landing on the Perfect Game All-America Third Team. He also was voted to the American Conference preseason All-Conference team.
Cate enters his junior season as one of the top pitching prospects in the country. Already this offseason, Cate has been listed as the No. 11 top college prospect by D1Baseball.com, No. 13 by Baseball America and the No. 33 top MLB Prospect by MLB.com
Cate has earned the accolades after closing out his sophomore season with 102 strikeouts, becoming the first UConn pitcher in program history to strike out 100 batters or more in multiple seasons. After just two seasons in Storrs, he has already collected his 200 Anthony Kay (2014-16), who struck out 263 batters in three seasons with the Huskies, holds the program record for strikeouts.
The junior competed with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team for the second-consecutive summer and led the team with 20 strikeouts in 12 innings of work and recorded a 0.75 ERA in international competition.
The Huskies begin their 2018 campaign on Friday, Feb. 16 at Kennesaw State at 4 p.m. The Huskies are scheduled to play their home opener on March 7 against Yale.
