Tim Cate Lands on USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Watch List

STORRS, Conn. - UConn left-handed pitcher Tim Cate was named to the Preseason USA Baseball Golden Spikes Watch List on Friday evening. Cate becomes the fifth Husky to land on the watch list since 2011 for the Huskies.

The preseason watch list features 55 of the nation’s top amateur players, from high school and college baseball. The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will maintain a rolling list of players, allowing athletes to play themselves into consideration for the award throughout the season.

Cate has landed on three-preseason All-American teams after landing on the second team, Baseball America second team and Perfect Game All-America third team. He was also voted to the American Conference preseason All-Conference team.

The Manchester, Conn. native enters his junior season as one of the top pitching prospects in the country. Already this offseason, Cate has been listed as the No. 11 top college prospect by, No. 13 by Baseball America and the No. 33 top MLB Prospect by

Cate has earned accolades after closing out his sophomore season with 102 strikeouts, becoming the first UConn pitcher in program history to strike out 100 batters or more in multiple seasons. After just two seasons in Storrs, he has already collected his 200th career strikeout, becoming the 11th pitcher to accomplish the feat. Anthony Kay (2014-16), who struck out 263 batters in three seasons with the Huskies, holds the program record for strikeouts.

The junior competed with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team for the second-consecutive summer and led the team with 20 strikeouts in 12 innings of work and recorded a 0.75 ERA in international competition. Anthony Kay (2016), Carson Cross (2015), George Springer (2011) and Matt Barnes (2011) have all represented the Huskies on the Golden Spikes Watch List since 2011.



The Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List will be released on April 10.
