Feb. 11, 2014

NCBWA Release

STORRS, Conn. – UConn southpaw David Mahoney (Colchester, Conn.) has been named to the 2014 NCBWA ‘Stopper of the Year’ Preseason Watch List, the organization announced on Tuesday (Feb. 11). The ‘Stopper of the Year’ is presented annually to the top relief pitcher in college baseball.

Mahoney, a redshirt junior, looks to be a key factor in the UConn bullpen this season after appearing in a program-record 34 contests last season. In 34.1 innings of work, Mahoney compiled a 2.36 ERA and held opponents to a paltry .213 batting average against. He saved some his best work for the postseason, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings in the BIG EAST Championship to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

In his career, Mahoney has made 44 appearances, holding a 2.19 ERA in 53.1 innings. He has also compiled a 3-2 record, two saves and has allowed only nine career extra base hits. The UConn hurler is one of three pitchers in The American to earn a spot on the watch list, joining Louisville’s Nick Burdi and USF’s Lawrence Pardo.

Mahoney and the Huskies open the 2014 season on Friday with a trip to Port Charlotte, Fla. where they will take on Ohio State, Indiana State and Auburn in the Snowbird Classic. Stay tuned for a full season preview, coming shortly.
