GREENSBORO, NC - In what turned out to be a low scoring affair, the University of Connecticut baseball team began its 2001 campaign Friday with a 2-0 loss against the University of North Carolina- Greensboro. With the win UNCG improved to 2-2, while UConns record stands at 0-1.

UNCG got all the scoring it would need as the Spartans Doug Schutt singled to left center in the bottom of the first. Schutt would advance to second on the only stolen base of the game before making it to third when Chris Mittendorf grounded out to UConn pitcher Pat Sperone (Jr., Sicklerville, NJ). Nick Lockhart, who won UNCGs first game of the year at North Caroina A&T on a three-run homer and a grand slam on successive at bats, drove in the Spartans first run with a single to right field. The only other score of the game came in part to a Joe Kagerer (Sr., Lebanon, CT) miscue in the third, which allowed UNCGs Jay Maule to reach with a Schutt bunt allowing Maule to get into scoring position before a Shane Schumaker single to right field brought him across the plate for what turned out to be the final run of the game.

Although the Huskies fell victim to a lack of offense, Michael Tripaldi (Jr., Groton, MA) led the effort with a 2-3 performance with a single to left in the second and a shot down the left field line in the seventh. The Huskies other two hits came from Mike Scott (Jr., Darien, CT) and Ryan Treat (Sr., Uncasville, CT). Scott singled to left in the first to start things off, while Treat also singled on a shot to center field that came in the third.

Connecticuts best opportunities came in the second and sixth innings as the Huskies left two stranded in both frames. No UConn was able to advance to third during the game.

The Spartans Everett Hancock improved to 2-1 as he scattered the four UConn singles through 6.2 innings before he was relieved by Ted Toler as Hancock picked up the third combined shutout of his career. Toler took care of the final 2.1 innings and in doing so, earned his ninth career save as he has five combined shutouts in his four seasons in Greensboro.

For the Huskies, Sperone worked five innings and took the loss, while Jesse Carlson (So, Kensington, CT) pitched three innings in relief. Sperone returns to the roster after a truncated sophomore season in which he underwent elbow surgery. Carlson attained All-BIG EAST Rookie status a year ago.

The three-game set continues Saturday at 1 p.m. and will conclude Sunday at noon.
