STORRS, Conn. - UConn junior LHP Anthony Kay was one of 50 NCAA Division I and high school baseball players named to the 2016 Golden Spikes Award Watch List, as announced by USA Baseball on Tuesday afternoon.
Sponsored by Major League Baseball, and presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation, the 39th Golden Spikes Award will be presented on June 30 in Los Angeles. The preseason watch list features 50 of the nation's top amateur players, from high school and college baseball. The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will maintain a rolling list of athletes, allowing players to play themselves into consideration for the award throughout the season.
Kay, the 2016 American Athletic Conference Preseason Co-Pitcher of the Year, will enter his junior season as the team's No. 1 starter after earning a spot on the league's All-Conference First Team a season ago. In 2015, the southpaw notched an 8-6 record with a team-best 2.07 ERA to go along with 96 strikeouts in 100.0 innings of work.
In two seasons in Storrs, Kay has compiled 13 wins with 152 strikeouts in 167.0 innings. During the fall season, he was honored with the program's Mrs. Mary Dropo Unsung Hero Award.
The Huskies open up the 2016 regular season on Friday when they begin a three-game set at UTSA. A complete weekend preview will be available on uconnhuskies.com on Wednesday.
