STORRS, Conn. - USA Baseball announced its 2011 preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List on Thursday as UConn juniors Matt Barnes and George Springer were named to the 50-player list.

The watch list features the nation's top amateur players, who will look to win the Golden Spikes Award, which will be presented on Monday, July 11 at the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest in Phoenix, Ariz.

Barnes and Springer have already been recognized this preseason as two of the best players in the BIG EAST Conference as well as in the nation. Barnes was named the 2011 BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while being named a preseason All-American according to Louisville Slugger and the College Baseball Lineup.

Springer was tagged as the 2011 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and earned preseason All-America honors from Louisville Slugger, the College Baseball Lineup, the NCBWA as well as ESPN.

UConn's season opens on Friday night against Purdue in Dunedin, Fla. The Huskies first home game at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, Conn. is set for Tuesday, March 22 at 3:00 p.m.
