After opening the 2016 season with a three-game series at UTSA, the UConn baseball team continues non-conference play when it travels to the campus of Austin Peay to participate in the 2016 Governors Challenge at Raymond C. Hand Park. The Huskies will open weekend play on Friday, Feb. 26 with a tilt against Missouri St. at 12:30 p.m., before challenging the Governors on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Alcorn St. on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

UConn (1-2, 0-0 The American) dropped a pair of one-run contests on Friday and Saturday to the Roadrunners in San Antonio, Texas before bouncing back with a 9-6 victory in the Sunday finale. Senior co-captain Bobby Melley (Barnstable, Mass.) paced the Husky offense in the opening weekend, collecting five hits in 12 at-bats, including his sixth career homer, while OF Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.) set the table as the leadoff man, scoring a team-best four times in the three-game set.

Connecticut has never met any of its scheduled weekend opponents in its 120-year history. The three programs are among five teams the Huskies are slated to face for the first time in the 2016 campaign.

Friday’s match-up with the Bears will represent Connecticut’s first neutral site game of the season. In 2015, the Huskies were 9-3 on neutral diamonds, including a 7-1 mark during the regular season. UConn is scheduled to open season with nine games away from J.O. Christian Field before hosting in-state foe Yale on March 8.

In 13 seasons of competition under the watch of head coach Jim Penders, UConn owns a 418-297-4 record, advancing to three NCAA Tournaments and winning the 2013 Big East Tournament crown.
