PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior right-hander Wills Montgomerie captured American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors as announced by the conference on Monday.
Montgomerie (Lakeville, Conn.) pitched brilliantly on Saturday against the Texas Longhorns in a 2-1 victory for the Huskies. The junior hurler racked up a career-high 13 strikeouts in the effort, yielding just four hits to Texas in 6.1 innings of work.
Montgomerie was on the ropes in the first inning with runners at the corners and no one out but he was able to buckle down and escape the frame without any damage incurred. Nine of the next 12 outs for Montgomerie came via the strikeout.
In back-to-back weekends, Husky starters have struck out 13 batters in an outing. On Opening Day, sophomore Tim Cate struck out 13 River Hawks batters in a 5-3 UConn triumph over UMass Lowell.
UConn (4-3) returns to action on Friday, March 3 at 1 p.m. against Western Michigan in the first game of the Stetson Tournament held in DeLand, Fla.
