WICHITA, Kan. - UConn baseball sophomore Max McDowell (North Huntingdon, Pa.) has been named to the watch list for the 2014 Johnny Bench Award presented by collegesavings.com, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced this week. The award is presented annually to the top catcher in college baseball.

McDowell is one of 72 players nominated in the nation, and one of four from The American. Head coaches submitted nominations prior to the season. The list can be expanded up until May 5, and finalists will be announced on June 3.

The UConn backstop had a strong freshman campaign a year ago, playing in 54 games with 47 starts. He hit .259 on the year, clubbing four home runs and driving in 25 RBIs. McDowell also got on a base at a .366 clip, scored 22 runs and caught 15 runners on 60 stolen base attempts. So far in the early stages of his sophomore campaign, he is hitting .182 with three runs scored and two RBIs. McDowell has also been a calming influence on the UConn pitching staff, which currently holds  a 3.01 ERA.

McDowell and the Huskies are in action this weekend when they take on the University of Florida on the road for a three game set. First pitch on Friday (March 7) is set for 7 p.m.
