DAVIS, Calif. – The UConn baseball team heads west to California to open a seven-game spring break trip against the UC Davis Aggies. The three-game series can be heard on 91.7 WHUS or online at fm.whus.org.
The Huskies (6-4) enter the weekend ranked first in the country with 12.5 per nine innings this season. Junior Wills Montgomerie holds the national lead in strikeouts with 36 through three starts. The Huskies are ahead of their school record pace from a season ago when they set the program record with 561 strikeouts. Through 10 games the Huskies have totaled in 122 strikeouts, last year the Huskies posted 92 strikeouts after 10 games.
Zac Susi continues to shine in his second season in Storrs. The UConn catcher registered a career-high four RBIs on Sunday against St. Joseph’s. Susi currently leads the team with a .371 average and five-multi hit performances. The Southington native also leads the way in RBIs (10), slugging (.600) and on-base percentage (.455).
The Huskies expect a boost from All-Conference performer and Co-captain Willy Yahn who is expected to return this weekend. Yahn has worked his way back from a broken left hand that has sidelined him for the first three weekes of the season. Yahn led The American Conference with 88 hits a season ago.
UConn and UC Davis will meet for the first time on the diamond this weekend. The Aggies are a relatively new program to Division I, joining in 2008.
The Aggies (4-7) enter the weekend coming off a 10-2 victory over Penn State on Wednesday. The Aggies are led offensively by Jacob Thomas and Ryan Anderson. Both players lead the team with 15 hits. Thomas ranks first on the team in average (.375) runs (10) and doubles (4). Anderson is hitting .357 and leads the squad in home runs (3) and RBIs (9). On the mound, Orlando Razo has posted a 2-1 record in three starts and has recorded 20 strikeouts in 17.0 innings.
