Baseball Tops Eastern Kentucky, 5-4, To Conclude Southern Trip

BRADENTON, Fla. (March 11, 2006) – The University of Connecticut baseball team scored all five of its runs in the fifth inning on Saturday and held on for a 5-4 win over Eastern Kentucky. UConn improves its record to 7-5 on the season while Eastern Kentucky evens its record to 5-5.

UConn junior shortstop Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) was three for four in the game with two doubles and a run scored. Husky junior catcher Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) was two for four with two RBI and a double.

Day had a two-out two-run double to highlight the fifth inning. UConn’s other runs in that inning came when sophomore Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) scored on an error, junior Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) had a bases-loaded walk that plated Donovan and a fielder’s choice that scored freshman Dale Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.).

Senior Nick Tucci (Medford, Mass.) picked up the win for the Huskies to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. He gave up just three hits and struck out five with one walk in five innings of work. Freshman Erik Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) picked up his first save of the season.

The Huskies open the Northern portion of their season on Tuesday when they play at Northeastern at 3:00 p.m.
