TAMPA, Fla. (March 19, 2006) – Two runs in the bottom of the ninth was just what South Florida needed to overcome the Huskies and win the weekend series with a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) went 3-for-4 on the day with a run batted in, but it was not enough to maintain the lead for Connecticut.  With the loss, the Huskies drop to 9-7 on the season with a 1-2 record in the BIG EAST.  With the victory, the Bulls improve to 10-11 overall and 2-1 in the BE.

UConn got the game started in the fourth inning with two runs.  Senior Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.) started off the inning with a double down the left field line.  In the next at-bat, junior Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) singled to the shortstop, putting two men on.  Junior co-captain Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) reached on a fielder’s choice, advancing Donovan to second, but Wasserman was put out at third on the play.  With two men still on base, Mahoney singled through the left field side to score Donovan, putting the Huskies on the board.  Senior Bryan Maler (Ansonia, Conn.) singled in his at-bat to advance the runners and load the bases for freshman Erik Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.).  Turgeon singled to right center, scoring Day and notching the second Husky run of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, USF cut UConn’s lead to within one on a series of walks that helped to score Joey Angelberger.  This was just one of two runs allowed by senior Nick Tucci (Medford, Mass.) in the game.  The starter pitched 7.1 innings, allowed seven hits and two runs in his time on the mound.  The Bulls’ second run came in the eighth inning.  Addison Maruszak started off the inning for USF with a single to right field.  In the next at-bat, Kris Howell dribbled a sacrifice bunt to Tucci to advance Maruszak to second.  Matt McHargue notched a single in the following at-bat to move Maruszak to third.  A single to left by Brandin Daniel scored Maruszak and tied the game at two heading into the final inning of play.

UConn scored one more run in the top of the ninth to take the lead 3-2, but that lead would not last.  USF scored two runs in the bottom for the final inning to take the game and the series.

The Huskies will next play on March 22 at in-state foe, Quinnipiac.  The game is slated for 3:0o p.m.
