UConn Takes On Yale In Relocated Game, Visits CCSU This Week

After a successful 6-2 run through its Spring Break trip, the UConn baseball team (13-8) continues midweek action with contests vs. Yale (6-4) on March 24 and at Central Connecticut (5-6) on March 25. The match-up against Yale has been moved from West Haven to Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. and is set for 3:30 p.m. The game at CCSU will be a 3 p.m. first pitch.

The University of Connecticut baseball team scored five runs in its first time at-bat and never looked back, defeating Yale, 14-1, on Wednesday at J.O. Christian Field. With the win, the Huskies improve to 13-13 this season, while the Bulldogs fall to 9-12.

Ward Tosses Complete Game In 9-1 Win Over CCSU
Brian Ward tossed a one-run complete game to propel the University of Connecticut baseball team to a 9-1 victory over in-state rival Central Connecticut State University on Monday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. UConn evened its record at 19-19 with the win, while Central drops to 13-15 in 2014.

The Huskies are coming off a series win at former Big East rival Seton Hall, taking two of three against the Pirates. After a dominant performance from Carson Cross (Brentwood, N.H.) in a 1-0 victory on March 21, UConn and SHU split a doubleheader on March 22 with the Huskies taking game two by a score of 6-3. Willy Yahn (Sharon, Conn.) went 4-for-7 with two doubles in the doubleheader while Vinny Siena (Woodbridge, Conn.) was 4-for-4 with a walk in game two.

Siena leads the Huskies at the dish in the first third of 2015, coming at 10th in The American and tops on UConn with a .370 batting average. Siena is third in the league with 34 hits and leads UConn with seven doubles, holding a team-best .522 slugging percentage and 13 RBIs. Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.) is second on Connecticut with a .305 average and has added 12 stolen bases, while Max McDowell (North Huntingdon, Pa.) is batting .301 with three home runs and 14 RBIs.

The UConn pitching staff is among the national leaders with a 2.54 ERA this season, good for third in the conference. The Huskies lead the league with a .210 batting average/against and have struck out 180 batters, third in The American. Andrew Zapata (Staten Island, N.Y.) is slated to start against Yale after five innings of two-run ball at Wake Forest on March 17, while William Montgomerie (Lakeville, Conn.) will take the ball against CCSU following 4.2 shutout innings in his first career start at William & Mary on March 18.

The Huskies own an all-time record of 40-21-1 against Yale and a 28-8 mark against Central Connecticut, winning all three games they played against the two schools last season by a combined score of 29-3. UConn first played CCSU on its Spring Break trip in Winter Haven, Fla., taking down the Blue Devils on March 17 by a score of 6-1 in 10 innings. The Huskies then defeated Yale at J.O. Christian Field on April 2, 14-1, before topping Central again in Storrs on April 21 by a 9-1 margin.

Yale is 6-4 on the year thanks to a potent offense, with a team batting average of .294. Eric Hsieh leads the way with a .541/.640/.622 slash line with three doubles and five RBIs. Richard Slenker is batting .357 with a home run and a team-best 10 RBIs, while Green Campbell is second on the squad with a .368 average. The Bulldog pitching staff holds an 8.49 ERA on the season.

CCSU comes in at 5-5 on the young season. The Blue Devils are led at the dish by Dominic Severino, who is hitting .390 with five doubles, a home run and 12 RBIs, all tops on the squad. Dean Lockey (.368) and Ian Glassman (.366) are also top bats for Central Connecticut. The Blue Devil pitching staff has compiled a 3.35 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 102.0 innings on the year.

Following the midweek games, UConn begins American Athletic Conference play with a trip to league-newcomer Tulane. The Huskies will visit New Orleans for three games with the Green Wave from March 27-29.
