STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team heads into its final weekend of non-conference play when it takes on Columbia in a three-game series on March 25-26. The Huskies and Lions will open play on Friday at Satow Stadium at 3 p.m. before rounding out the weekend with a Saturday doubleheader at J.O. Christian Field starting at 12 p.m.
UConn (9-10, 0-0 The American) dropped a midweek contest, 8-4, to Central Connecticut in its last time out on March 23. Sophomore infielder Willy Yahn (Sharon, Conn.) notched his third four-hit game of the season in the setback, while freshman John Toppa (Portsmouth, R.I.) launched his first career homerun.
Connecticut owns a 1-0 all-time record against Columbia, topping the Lions, 12-2, on March 18, 2002 in the only previous meeting. The Huskies are 1-0 against Ivy League competition in 2016, defeating Yale, 8-2, in their home opener on March 8.
Through five weekends of play, UConn ranks 35th in the nation with 2.21 doubles/gm, 39th with 7.4 runs/gm, and 40th with 0.95 homers/gm.
Columbia enters the series with a 4-11 overall record, beating Army, 13-3, on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions are hitting .257 as a team with a staff ERA of 7.13.
