STORRS, Conn. (March 30, 2007) — South Florida starting pitcher Danny Otero allowed just one run on six scattered hits while striking out eight in seven innings of work as the University of Connecticut baseball team dropped a 16-1 decision to the Bulls Friday afternoon in the home-opener from J.O. Christian Field.

Otero (5-4) gave up a hit to UConn leadoff man Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass) to open the bottom of the first, but didn’t allow another hit until the Huskies scored a run in the home half of the fifth inning.

Husky starting pitcher Mike Tarsi (Danbury, Conn.) (2-2) took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits in four innings on the hill.

South Florida (21-8, 5-2 BIG EAST) scored the game’s first run in the top of the third inning when third baseman Addison Maruzak recorded an RBI single up the middle to score catcher Brad Karns.

The Bulls tacked on five more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead.  Right fielder Josh LeRoy drove in two Bulls with a double to left field, while left fielder Ryan Soares delivered a two-run single of his own.

After South Florida scored three runs in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to a 9-0 lead, the Huskies scored their first run of the game in the home half of the fifth.  Junior Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and junior designated hitter Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) followed with a single through the right side to put runners on the corners.  Senior right fielder Josh Farkes (Boston, Mass.) notched his 15th RBI of the season when he plated Mahoney with a single through the right side.

From that point on, South Florida scored seven runs over the final four innings to pick up the win in the first game of the three-game series.

Fatse finished the afternoon with a 2-for-3 showing, while Karl went 2-for-4 as the only other Husky multi-hit performer.

UConn and South Florida resume a three-game series Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. from J.O. Christian Field.
